Shenstone Community Library

Not just a library – an important environmental resource and trailblazer.

The library environment group at Shenstone in Staffordshire are constantly evolving projects and identifying new ideas to concentrate their environmental eddorts and importantly educate and enthuse their community, whilst raising funds for other community groups and charities. Many of the library volunteers – and there are over a hundred – play a vital part in this. 

COMMUNITY EDUCATION

A key part of the work at Shenstone is supporting and educating the wider community to learn more about how to protect the environment. Just some of the ways are:

  • Talks from local Beekeepers, raising awareness of bee conservation and some amazing products produced locally including honey and bee gin. 
  • Working ith Hedgehog Rescue to act as a distribution point for re-homed hoglets. 
  • Information board with a different green topic each month – sharing ideas for library users to try.
  • A thermal camera which is made available to Library users so they can check where heat may be escaping from their home. 
  • Repair cafe where public can bring along small appliances, garden tools, clothing and ornaments to learn how to repair them instead of throwing them away. 
  • Bicycle repair sessions, teaching how to maintain and repair. 
  • A talk from waste management firm Violia about recycling household waste.
